Ironman 70.3 Durban 2016

Ironman 70.3 Durban 2016

Durban dished up some great weather and rough seas for this year’s Durban 70.3. As with any Ironman event, safety is of the highest standard and this year the race organizer’s cancelled the swim for all age groupers while the pros still went ahead with the swim start. This in my opinion was great call as 2 pros were pulled from the water and swim conditions were terrible resulting in some slow times for pro athletes.

For the rest of the age groupers, the race was started with a rolling start for the bike section followed by the 21km run along the promenade. The bike section is a beautiful route along the coast line heading towards Zimbali where the turnaround point was situated, athletes then head back towards Durban, over the rolling hills and back to transition. The run was a very fast flat route, however the heat seemed to be getting to some athletes.

A big congrats to Cuan and Megan on completing their first ever 70.3 as well to the rest of our athletes. Our first athlete home was Craig West in a time 4:13:31, finishing in 2nd place in his age group. Congrats to Karen O on finishing top 10 in her age group.
